Introduction:

The focus on climate is ever present and only going to continue growing. Our customers need visibility and often reporting capability as part of their ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) Governance.

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive is an EU regulation designed to boost transparency and hold companies accountable for their environmental, social and governance (ESG) impacts. If covered by CSRD, a company must disclose their sustainability practices.

It is now possible to see CO2 emissions in Qargo, these are shown at both an order and trip level. However, it is worth noting that the data presented is calculated using modelled data, therefore the calculations are based on the assumed route generated, and NOT the actual routes driven or fuel consumption.

Configuration

Although there are 2 routing options available in Qargo, CO2 emission visibility is currently only available if using PTV Routing. Once this is configured the CO2 emissions will automatically begin to show on any NEW orders.

Please check with your Account Manager if you think this needs to be updated.

Calculation format:

The total calculation reported is based on the GLECv3 framework, which uses the Well to Wheel (WtW) concept. The dataset used for calculations is according to ISO14083 standards. Well to Wheel (WtW) emissions help assess the environmental impact of different fuels and technologies, and help identify the most environmentally sustainable options for mobility and energy.

  • Well-to-wheel (WtW): Emissions are the total greenhouse gas emissions produced at every stage of a fuel's life cycle, from extraction to use. This includes emissions from production, transportation, distribution, and use.

Well to Wheel (WtW)calculations are made up of:

  • Well to Tank(WtT): Emissions from extracting raw materials, refining them and transporting them to fuelling stations.

  • Tank to Wheel(TtW): Emissions from burning the fuel in a vehicle, also known as tailpipe emissions.

WTW calculation = Well to Tank (WtT) + Tank to Wheel (TtW): Hover for tip to show calculations.

Visibility in Qargo

The calculation visualised in Qargo is based on the vehicle profile selected for routing; in an Order, it will use the default vehicle category or transport service, as configured. Once the order is assigned to a specific asset the Trip may show different calculations if the assigned resource is larger (or smaller) than the default used.

In the example below, orders are based on Rigid, while the Resource allocated is a Tractor with trailer:

The route is based on the estimated ROAD routing and does not represent actual route driven or fuel consumption. Intermodal connections (accompanied or unaccompanied) are not taken into account.

Calculations are based on the order directly, not the trips and as such we do not allocate emissions from trips back to the orders.

Reporting

While this is a basic calculation model, and as such is not compliant with CSRD reporting directly, it is possible to extract data that can then be used to complete any internal or external reporting requirements. Reports can be configured to generate via the Qargo application, or via BigQuery data if accessible.

It is possible to create a template report that can be used to export the order emissions.

Navigate to the Configuration menu, and select the Templates option.

Click ‘Create Report’

The Create data export screen will display. Use the ‘Add Field’ option to add the report parameters to include. There are 3 metrics that can be reported:

  • Well to tank: Emissions from extraction, refining & transporting raw materials - can be used for providing Scope 3 Internal reporting (Indirect GHG emissions).

  • Tank to Wheel: Emissions from burning the fuel in a vehicle, (tailpipe emissions) - can be used for Scope 1 Internal reporting (Direct emissions).

  • Well to Wheel: Total CO2 emissions - can be used for providing Scope 3 report to an external party (Indirect GHG emissions).

TIP: For reporting TOTAL EMISSIONS, use the Well to Wheel (WtW) value.

When building the report parameters, there is the option to aggregate the values reported either as the individual original values, or as a sum value:

Add the metrics to be included in the report, which can include customer or location details in addition to the emissions metrics.

Click SAVE.

The Report template will now be available in the Orders screen. Click ‘Export’ and select the CO2 report template. Select the individual rows or ALL to generate for all orders.

This data is also available in via BigQuery for customers using that connection.
